The Merchandise Lofts – 155 Dalhousie Street
Built in the 1930′s and originally the Sears Warehouse, The Merchandise Lofts was converted into a 504 suite loft in 1998. Taking up a full city block – this is easily the largest authentic loft in the city.
A little history… In the early part of this century, the well known Chicago architect named Max Dunning teamed up with the Toronto firm of Burke, Horwood and White, to create some of the most important industrial buildings in the City. Many of these have become icons – the CityTV building at Queen and John and the Tip Top Tailor building on the Lakeshore, for example. Now the largest of these architectural masterpieces – the Robert Simpson Mail Order Catalogue Building at Church and Dundas – has been transformed into The Merchandise Building Original Lofts.
Loft suites vary greatly as there are so many of them. Generally though, they feature polished concrete floors, custom designed kitchens, exposed duct work, expansive warehouse style windows and open concept floor plans.
